Music is my Mantra
Thanks for stopping by out here in the Exoatmosphere to visit me.The dream has always been to create unique music formulated from the past 50 years of music listening.

Music is my Life
I was born in the late 1950s and was literally a child of the 1960s. The music that hit my ears then was a major influence on my present day composition. Buddy Holly died around the time I was born...the was a change in the air....a music was never the same...and there I was listening to the change...
Child of the 60s
Every genre that I hear really appeals to me, with only one real criterion, the music must be real and not just something for commercial value [not to be negative, but a lot of stuff fits into that category].
Think of all the truly great music through the years....albeit Ayreon, Bach, Beethoven, Black Sabbath, Coltrane, Miles Davis, Stravinsky, whomever, et al.
Rickenbacker 4003S
My dream is to make credible music that is incredible...Some time this is difficult to compose music all by oneself...but that is what I do...There is infinite space as my inspiration...ever notice that the only real boundaries are the man-made boundaries?

Exoatmosphere
I chose that name for a reference to out in space. Most people who know me from daily interaction, know I am out there....[maybe...actually a lot].
In the past I have recorded five albums...
In the past I have recorded five albums...
A) -31 degrees
B) Apex of a Cosmic Collusion
C) Prelude to an Avante-Garde Opus
D) Epic Conversation http://www.myspace.com/epicconversationfeaturingjimmyd

Musical Experience is Knowledge to Build Musical Wisdom
Each album is a learning experience...I truly believe that on a macro-level knowledge is the greatest aspect of life collectively. At the micro-level, love among the our circle of beings is the the other great aspect of life as individuals.
So knowledge and love drive us into perpetuity. The love of music, along with the knowledge of how to make music steer me toward my next endeavor....I today do not know what that is....I have new strings on the basses and guitars...along with new patches on the synthesizers....and lots of singing in the shower....but I have yet to scribe a concept...Yes, I wrote concept albums....I love concept albums...Mike Oldfield is on the stereo right now. Mike has many concept albums...Now I need one...just a concept...
The most recent CD Intangible [released on idisk mac and MySpace concurrently March 2009] was an extremely loose concept about how most everything in our lives within our world is intangible.. the environment, hope, knowledge, love, wisdom, and probably everything under the sun ever thought of...and then some...
Where Intangible fell short as a concept album is that the concept was pieced together from previous unreleased scribed notes....if it was food it would have been leftovers.
In the Studio Posing as Composer
Exoatmospheric Studio located somewhere in North America, is basically a one man recording studio [Jimmy D] that offers the world a unique musical experience [to say the least].
The purpose of this website is to establish a means to communicate with the people who listen to my recordings. In order for me to improve my quality of recording and song writing skills. I typically request feedback. In the past the feedback to me is very important for me to improve my work.
Jimmy D has three previously CD recordings released. Now out of print. [Thank God!!!] For the first two CD recordings ("Thirty-one Below" and "Prelude to an Avant-Garde Opus"), the objective for me was to improve whatever comments that were feedback to me. An example is: "…Your music is incredible but your vocals suck." Fair enough [at the time] that I invested in better microphones, pop filters, harmonizer, reverb, etc., then spent a fair amount of time singing to increase my intonation skills.
So that on my third CD, titled the "Apex of Cosmic Collusion", the initial trail test responses yielded such comments as: "…Your vocals have vastly improved." Something the casual listener must understand is that voice is my fourth instrument. So basically if you are on my email list you will probably receive a copy. Your job is to ensure that I have your proper snail mail address. I do not release for commercial purposes [I stink].
Years of hiding away in extra bedrooms…once a year for the past ~20 years or so I buy a value added piece of gear. Some how over the years this has paid off for me. As both a bassist and keyboardist a lot of my purchases were what I could afford at the time. Keyboards are primarily the heart of my compositions. Bass guitar is my link to other people's music. So with that in mind...I scour the internet and music catalogs to find what 200 bucks will find me. An Akai Harmonic Processor helped my weak vocal tracks...it is like an entire choir at my fingertips.
Or a Line 6 POD X3 bass / guitar / amp / speaker simulator effect module...that opened the world of bass and guitar effects... and I can add some keyboard and guitar patches to the mix with it.
A recent edition was a dual channel ART Tube Preamp...it is sweet...sound great with my condenser mics
Keyboards
Keyboards
The Korg Triton has every imaginable sound that I could ever want to compose to… pianos, organ, synthesizer, drum, electronic, strings, brass, you name it…
An excellent complimentary Korg keyboard is the Radius. That Radius reminds me of the Mini-Moog except with a lot more technology. I I love to tweak knobs to alter parameters.
A Proteus [I bought that in San Diego in 1990 it is SN 500. I used that on some of my earlier rrecordings that I made for friends. The Proteus is a little dated but sounds good in the mix.
I have a 1984 MIDI Synthesizer Roland Juno 106...the heart of my analog synthesizer As a matter of fact the salesperson in Costa Mesa, CA was a PhD student. His thesis was about Physical Modeling!!! I got a short course on that subject when I bought my Juno...
Kawai K1 FM Synthesizer is a little outdated but provides some 8-bit sound tables [laughs]...FM with some effects don't sound too bad in the back of the mix.
A Hammond-Suzuki MIDIStep pedal board makes some hand free keyboard playing available to me... when I am guitar or bass. Some day I want some MOOGs and ARPs, or a real Hammond B3 with a 147 Leslie!!!!!!!!!
As far as Virtual VSTi equipment A Yamaha and M-Audio round that out as far as Digital Audio Work (DAW) Stations with CuBase and Ableton Live 7Le...I have had so much conflict with Vista 64, associated drivers, and compatibility that I gave up on that. I even had lightning strike on my HP laptop, lost all my registry. So I got discouraged and wasted about six months trying to get all of that working. I have so many other sound sources that I found the freezes, zippering effect, and latenacy enough to drive me metaphorically crazy.
Rickenbacker 4003S Bass
What can I say the Rickenbacker 4003 is the only inanimate object on this earth that I truly love… I want to be buried with it!!!! I bought that in California and I lived really close to the Rickenbacker factory in Santa Ana, California.
Fender P-Bass
The workhorse of my collection is a dark red wine colored Fender P -Bass.
Fender J-Bass
To top off the collection a Fender J-Bass will growl at you once you enter my studio...
I would be incomplete with my bass guitars...ever single song I have ever listened to I dissect the bass line...
G&L 2500 Five-String Active Bass
The G&L 2500 is my foray into both the active electronic bass and the five string version. It is fun to thump on that low B....it is not wobbly...and the G&L has great tone. Glad to see Leo Fender devoted his final years to such a great product!
Guitar
Godin LG
My Godin LG is my workhorse for the electric guitars. I love the tone with a five-way tone selection switch. I love the sweet acoustic setting you can get from it. I love this instrument. The LG is a fine instrument for under a grand with great craftsmanship.
Epiphone Casino
Epiphone Casino 6 string electric with P90 pickups- it squeals like a pig!!! - What can I say is this is what the Beatles played at Shea Stadium back in '64. I bought mine about 10 miles from there in New Jersey.
Epiphone MD-100 Resonator
Epiphone MD-100 Resonator....It sounds like a banjo...I love to play slide with it...Still looking at the best way to mic that one.
Yamaha [top left hand corner]
I have an nice Yamaha 6 string acoustic that I bought for $100...It has a great tone for a cheap used guitar.
Miscellaneous
I endorse Furman Power Conditioners [I hope they give some!]. There is a Roland Pad 8 Drum Pad...when I need to beat something....I might upgrade to some Monster Power Conditioners to supplement the Furman Power Conditioners in the future. I find they work very well for commercial audio products.
Digitech DSP 256, Zoom 2.1Bu, Zoom 2.1G u, Boss Phase Shifter, Boss Digital Delay, Boss Metal Zone, Morley Wah, Alesis Microverb [and most of my other equipment has on-board effects].
Line 6 POD X3
The Line 6 POD X3 allows me to have the greatest tone for bass, guitar, and vocals...
Line 6 POD X3 + Boss DDL6 along with G&L 2500 Bass
Recording
Recording Equipment [over my shoulder]
Mackie 1604 and Tascam 788 give me a lot of flexibility in the recording department. I don't cut and paste!!! I play every channel of every track! AKG Series Perception 200, Audio Technica AT2020, (two) Heil PR22, Shure PG48 Mic along with a Dixion Mic to put my very bad vocals down…along with some racks of effects….In March 2011 I picked up a Blue Microphone - SPARK....great condensor mic!!! Its operational manual is shaped as a matchbox...and the actual Blue Mic is orange...[go figure]...
Blue Microphone SPARK it is orange!!!
Preamp....ART Preamplifier
The ART Tube Preamp is a new edition to my studio. I am still test driving it and I am generallly impressed. Nothing like the sound of some warm12AX7 tubes. As I mentioned within the keyboard section, the PC laptop environment is a little to tedious to get tweaked just right. So I opt for a dedicated Digital Multi-Track Recorder (DMTR). Trust me it is so much easier.

Right here in my basement man-cave world...Usually...concept albums rule...However, all viable forms of music bounce into my eardrums...classical, folk, funk, soul, rock, jazz, metal, and every valid form of music...
Let me know what you think????
